Dr Mahdi Al-Taher – Biography

Dr Mahdi Al-Taher is a Dutch double board-certified Consultant Gastrointestinal and
Oncologic surgeon with a sub specialization in Colorectal surgery. He has extensive
international training in advanced colorectal surgery, minimally invasive techniques, and
robotic surgery.

International Training

Dr Al-Taher graduated from medical school in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 2011.
Following his medical degree, he pursued surgical residency training in Maastricht, where
he developed a strong interest in colorectal surgery and innovative surgical techniques.

During his academic and surgical training, Dr Al-Taher was actively involved in research
and surgical education. He completed his Master’s research at the prestigious University of
Oxford in the United Kingdom, contributing to his academic foundation in surgical science
and clinical research.

In 2019, he undertook further specialised training at the Institut de Recherche contre les
Cancers de l’Appareil Digestif (IRCAD) in Strasbourg, France, where he completed work
related to his PhD research and gained advanced experience in minimally invasive and
robotic surgical techniques. He further expanded his expertise through a robotic surgery
fellowship at IRCAD Latin America in Brazil, focusing on cutting-edge robotic approaches in
gastrointestinal surgery.

Dr Al-Taher’s training spans several leading international centres, reflecting his commitment to integrating modern surgical technology, robotics, and evidence-based techniques into colorectal surgery.

He currently serves as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Sheikh Tahnoon Medical City
(STMC) and Tawam Hospital in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where he provides
specialised care for patients with colorectal conditions and continues to advance minimally
invasive surgical practice. In addition to his clinical duties, Dr Al-Taher sits on the scientific
committee for the Emirates Society of Colorectal Surgery and the Technology committee for
the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery. He has also been awarded Associate
Professor of the United Arab Emirates University, where he is actively involved in teaching
medical students and is also part of the core faculty for the surgical residency program,
contributing to the development of future surgeons.
